About Me

I was born in Brooklyn, New York in an intact working class Irish Catholic family and there I attended elementary school and high school.  When I was fourteen, with my father's encouragement, I became employed as a Junior Counselor in a CYO summer daycamp.  I enjoyed working with the 5 and 6 year old children, I received excellent training and I was rewarded with commendations and bonuses for outstanding performance.  I continued my summer work at CYO as a senior counselor for several years.

My entrance into college in 1968 gave me the opportunity to expand my horizons as I was enrolled in the experimental College of Liberal Arts at Fordham University's Lincoln Center campus. While my parents chose to move to Long Island, I took the opportunity to find shared housing situations in various neighborhoods in Manhattan.  It was an exciting time to be exposed to the cutting edge of political and social thinking.  A typical day might find me going from the lecture hall where Margaret Mead was speaking to an anti-Vietnam war protest to my work in a storefront adjacent to the Westside projects where the Fordham University Social Effort (FUSE) conducted tutoring and recreational programs for kids.  After graduating I traveled with friends and eventually relocated to San Francisco.

While continuing to evolve my understanding of children and deepening my commitment to creating emotionally healthy educational environments for kids, I sought employnment in California.  I was very fortunate to find the San Francisco School in 1976 where I began my professional career.  SFS is an independent progressive school serving diverse families in San Francisco with children two and a half years old through 8th grade.  While employed as an Assistant Teacher in the Montessori preschool/kindergarten I entered a two year teacher training program, obtained my certification and subesequently was retained in the position of Head Teacher.  I continued my employment at SFS for a total of 27 years and there I grew enormously as an educator, as a colaborator, as a person.  I also took every opportunity to increase my awareness of human development, psychology, parenting, learning, and creativity and in 1990 I decided to return to school to obtain an advanced degree in Counseling Psychology.  While teaching full time I was able to find the time to attend classes and participate in internships until I acheived my licensure in June of 2000.  I retired from teaching in 2005 and began employment as an Early Childhood Mental Health Consultant for Jewish Family and Children's Services in Marin County.  In that role I consulted with teachers, directors and parents of pre-schoolers in 10 diverse programs throughout the county and worked closely with a team of licensed clinicians until August of 2005.  Since then I have focused on my busy private practice in both San Francisco and Novato.  I reside in Novato with my beloved Anne and my cat Moo.
